As mayor of this town, it is my responsibility to prioritize the welfare and stability of our community above all else. While compassion and support for refugees are virtues we cherish, our current economic circumstances force us to reconsider the sustainability of accepting additional refugees.

Accepting refugees is extremely expensive. Refugees often enter their new country with very few resources and limited language skills, meaning that they rely on government assistance for housing, food, healthcare, language classes, and other expenses. In the United States, a study found that between 1990 and 2014, each refugee resettled cost the government $15,000. 1 In our case, we do not really have spare rooms of lands or economic aid because of the economic hardship we are experiencing. Accepting these refugees would waste a great amount of our tax, which should be applied in more sustainable and effective investment.

The refugee had a negative impact on employment. They not only steal away job posistions from the local, but also cause the salary to drop. Our jounalist interviewed Professor Richard, who is an expert in economy. He observes that the depression in economics led to less consumers and thus less job positions. There are already increasingly more unemployment in this town. If we absorb these refugees, the unemployment crisis would be very severe to our town people. Furthermore, the refugees accept low salary. This would result in dramatic drop in our average income, causing further problems for our market.
